How to Adopt a Competitive Strategy in an Organization

How to Adopt a Competitive Strategy in an Organization

Creating a competitive strategy as part of a marketing and business plan can aide you in competing in the marketplace and focus your efforts. When developing a competitive strategy, it is imperative that your organization determine if the advantage is sustainable over time. As you plan, it is crucial to adopt a competitive strategy in an organization to bring value to your consumers and the community.

Difficulty:
Moderate

Instructions

    • 1
Identify the focus areas of your organization and how you differentiate yourself from the competition. Will your organization be a leader, follower or a company that provides challenges? Determine who your target consumer is and identify your target population. Consider what kind of clients you serve or will serve and their characteristics, what you will provide, and where you will provide them. This is important on several levels, as it will help your organizational strategy.
    • 2
Make a list of competing organizations in your area or online that may have part of the current or future market share. Rank the competition from the strongest competitor to the weakest and consider trends in the market that may affect its size and consumer base. Outline the strengths and weaknesses of companies that offer the same or similar services. You may consider breaking this into four distinct categories, including consumer base, funding/investors, human resources, and online or regional publicity. Making this determination can help you find ways to push yourself ahead as a leader in your market and give you methods of competing with others in the marketplace.
    • 3
Create a list that focuses on how you will expand your market. This may include finding new users, creating new customers or even encouraging more usage of specific products or services. Based on this information, consider how you can protect your current market, while increasing your relationship with untargeted consumers.
    • 4
Gather all the information you have created and write a statement that describes your organizational strategy and your competitive strategy. You may also consider writing a statement that brings the two together, focusing both on the competition and organizational strategies.
    • 5
Examine and discuss the competitive strategy with shareholders or other organizational executives. You need to determine if the statement can prove sustainable over the next several years. Once you have a consensus that the competitive strategy will remain sustainable, you can then adopt it as your organization's business strategy.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many businesses find it beneficial to examine companies that have left the market in recent years to avoid making the same mistakes and also find a method of differentiating their organization from others in the current market.
  • Developing a competitive strategy does not mean that your company should berate other organizations in your area. Avoid exploiting other companies in advertisements and instead focus on how your products or services stand out. Develop your own brand image.

How to Cope With Holiday Burnout

When you've been crafting, making cards, shopping, decorating, wrapping, cleaning and baking for weeks, you may find your enthusiasm for the holidays begins to wane. Holiday burnout is a sign that you're overdoing it and that you need to slow down. There's nothing about Christmas or any other holiday season that's worth exhausting all your inner resources. Once you've had a break from the holiday preparations, you can get back into the swing of things with renewed vigor.

Instructions

    • 1
Take some time for yourself. Take a nap. Meditate. Curl up with a good book or magazine. Soak in a hot bathtub for an hour or two. Drop by your local coffee shop for a latte. Ride a bicycle or take a stroll through the park. Many of us have been trained to believe that activities like these are selfish. The truth is that they're essential to our physical, emotional and mental well-being.
    • 2
Listen to music. If you feel that you need soothing and winding down, listen to classical music, meditation music or smooth jazz. However, if you feel that you're in the mood for a release, listen to some rock, pop, electronica or alternative music. Dancing and singing can also make you feel energized again.
    • 3
Determine which holiday projects are really essential and which aren't. You'll need to put up the Christmas tree, buy presents and wrap them. However, you don't have to decorate your home to win a contest. You don't have to make all handmade ornaments in only a week. Some projects can be abandoned to foster your health and well-being.
    • 4
Ask for help from your friends and family. Delegate some of the holiday responsibilities to them. For example, have your family do some of the cleaning. Ask them to help wrapping presents that aren't for them. Have them assist with the preparation of the holiday meal.
    • 5
Put on some holiday music to provide inspiration and make chores more pleasant. This is especially helpful while making crafts, wrapping presents and decorating a Christmas tree. Incorporate the tasks into miniature holiday parties with your spouse and kids. Share some cookies, eggnog or hot chocolate while you're working.
    • 6
Use aromatherapy to relieve stress and to help you get back into the holiday spirit. Purchase a lamp ring, a fragrance diffuser that sits on top of a lightbulb. Find some holiday-scented essential oils such as pine, cinnamon, ginger and peppermint. Place the lamp ring on the light bulb while it's still cold. Then place a few drops of the oil on the lamp ring and turn on the light. The essential oils will gradually spread the fragrance through your home.

Tips & Warnings

  • After you get back to your holiday activities, continue to take breaks whenever you feel stressed out or overburdened.
  • Make sure you have enough time to complete a holiday project before you start it.
  • Don't eat while using toxic arts and crafts materials.
  • Take care not to touch the lamp ring while it's hot.
